Antonio Conte is certain that David Luiz will become a world-class player

David Luiz completed is transfer from Paris Saint-Germain over to Chelsea on the deadline day of the summer transfer window and he was expected to make his debut appearance for Chelsea on September 11 when his new club faced off with Swansea City in a Premier League match but it didn’t happen as the Brazilian defender was sidelined to the bench.

The transfer fee that Chelsea had to pay in order to bring David Luiz to Stamford Bridge was £34 million and Antonio Conte is confident that he is going to be able to turn his summer signing into one of the best defenders in the world.

“At 29, he is at a fantastic age to become one of the best defenders in the world. You can always improve and I’m seeing great commitment from him. He wants to play for Chelsea. This is a great opportunity for him also to improve. I repeat: he has good characteristics to become a fantastic defender.’’

“It’s important to remember when I started at Juventus, with Chiellini, Bonucci and Barzagli, the defence had been conceding a lot of goals. I remember that, before my arrival, many people told me: ‘They are no good, these defenders. No good.’ But then I started to work with them, I found a great commitment and attitude. Through the work, now we are talking about three of the best defenders in the world in Chiellini, Bonucci and Barzagli. But remember, when we started in that first year at Juventus, it wasn’t like that.” Chelsea’s Antonio Conte said.

David Luiz is anxious to start getting playing time and wear the Chelsea jersey in his first competitive match after having to settle on the sidelines during their recent match against Swansea City. With the injury of John Terry, defensive reinforcements can provide a significant help to Antonio Conte who has to the task of guiding Chelsea to the top spots of the Premier League and to compete in the Champions League.
